There’s change in the air, friends! If you haven’t been following the Seattle teachers’ boycott of standardized testing at Garfield High School, you should be. Read about it here. I had the privilege of attending a workshop at the NW Conference on Teaching for Social Justice in October 2012 that was led by a dynamic teacher from Garfield (Jesse Hagopian) and very passionate social justice educator in Portland (Adam Sanchez). Both contributed to a must read text for all of you social justice advocates and educators: Education and Capitalism: Struggles for Learning and Liberation. Both educators are involved in the region’s current resistance actions against standardized testing.
Okay, with that background and book recommendation, please do check out what the Portland Student Union is proposing: PPS & Portland Student Unions urge students to boycott Standardized Testing..
